About

This 13-minute experimental film documents the glass blowing of maestro Lino Tagliapietra, widely considered to be the world's best glass blower. Features the creative process, fine craft, teamwork, and the magic of glass blowing, instead of following a standard linear/educational narrative.

Lino is from Murano, Italy, and is famous for teaching Italian glass-blowing secrets to American glass artists. He has been working with his team of three Seattle glass blowers for over 12 years. This film documents their visit to the MIT Glass Lab in October 2010.

The film has a similar style to Bert Haanstra's Dutch short documentary film Glas (1958). We extend this playful style by reversing, speeding, and slowing time, so that viewers can focus on the essence of the process.

A carefully timed original score accentuates the playing with fire. The music was composed by Andrei Matorin and performed on violin, cello, and bass.
