Erik Demaine and Martin Demaine's Puzzles:

CSAIL Annual Meeting 2025 Puzzle

In what has become a regular event, Erik Demaine and Martin Demaine give out puzzles each year at our lab's Annual Meeting. Here is the 2025 edition.

This puzzle is inspired by a series of folding puzzles by Omega_3301.

Rules

In each puzzle, the goal is to fold into a doubly covered rectangle, meaning that the silhouette is a rectangle (or square), and there are exactly two layers throughout that rectangle.

There are three separate puzzles, shaped like an M, I, and T. In the M puzzle, you are required to first fold it in half as indicated, so that it is really a trapezoid. This puzzle is the hardest; the other two are relatively easy.

Printing Notes

Print the puzzle as large as possible on a piece of paper (single sided), and then cut out the three filled shapes (M, I, and T).

The puzzle was designed for color printing, but it will work on a black-and-white printer.

The PDF file is the best combination of printing quality and small file size. You will need a suitable viewer. Alternatively, you can print one of the images. If you can print images scaled to fit, use 150dpi. Otherwise, use 72dpi.
